Multiple Sclerosis Discovery May Explain Gender Gap
Washington University School of Medicine researchers, writing in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, reveal a potential link between the S1PR2 protein and the occurrence of multiple sclerosis in women. In studies of both mice and deceased MS patients, higher levels of S1PR2 were found in the region of the brain most commonly affected by the disease. Women are diagnosed with MS four times as often as men; up to 85% of all cases are of the relapsing remitting variety, where symptoms appear and disappear repeatedly over time. The next step of this important research is to determine if there’s a way to regulate S1PR2 and potentially treat or lessen MS symptoms.

Silicon Pill Beams Back Body’s Response to Medicines
New Scientist reports that Proteus Digital Health has developed a system known as Helius, which can track data on how well patients comply with prescription medication instructions. Currently, nearly 50% of all prescribed medications are not taken according to physician instructions or are not finished. This results in over $100 billion in otherwise avoidable annual hospitalization costs. The Helius system attaches a small, harmless sensor to each pill, which communicates ingestion information to a skin patch. That information can then be sent to a computer or a smartphone. If a patient forgets to take a pill, for example, this new technology could relay a reminder directly to his or her phone.

These Solar Roads Could Power the Entire Country
You’ve read about many new solar power ideas in recent weeks in this space—today’s solar power breakthrough poses an interesting question. What if the next solar power advance comes from a new place to gather the power of the sun? Typically, solar panels rest on rooftops. But could road surfaces grab power from sunlight too? That’s what the founders of the Solar Roadways project want to find out. The company’s prototype, comprised of strong, textured glass panels that can withstand up to 250,000 pounds of weight, could gather solar power, self-heat to melt ice, and also self-illuminate to give traffic warnings or create light for safer driving at night. If this project develops further, the 18,000 square miles of road surface in the US might just be the solar power generation breakthrough of the next decade.
